Ignazio Leone
The restaurant Brunelli opened in December 1997, and is owned by two cousins: Executive Chef Ignazio Leone and Russ Alan Brunelli, who handles the front of the house. Both are Italian-Americans, and their food tastes just like what a traditional Italian mother and grandmother used to make. In fact, Chef Leone learned to cook as a child by watching his mother and grandmother in the family restaurant. His true love is traditional Italian cooking, his antipasti are mostly Roman and some are rarely encountered in this country. One such antipasto is Spiedino Romano, an egg-battered mozzarella sandwich, with a lusty tomato/anchovy sauce and lots of capers. Desserts are all homemade, following the family tradition. Chef Ignazio Leone's love of traditional Italian cooking has led to the success of Brunelli here in New York City.
