Pietro Mosconi

If you've walked down MacDougal street anytime in the past 28 years, you have probably noticed the red sign and green awning that adorn the outside of Villa Mosconi Restaurant. A neighborhood fixture since 1976, Villa Mosconi is owned by Pietro Mosconi, an Italian man who traveled to the United States many years ago to make a better life for himself. Growing up in Piacenza, he learned to cook while assisting his mother in the kitchen. In 1966 he left Italy for New York and began training in several restaurants in the city. Although he did not always have a lot of money, the experience he gained at acclaimed restaurants like Giam Belli, Gino's of Lexington Avenue, Romeo Salta and Scoop, proved to be invaluable.

Ten years later, Mosconi's dreams came true when he learned that 69 MacDougal street was for sale. He bought the restaurant, named it Villa Mosconi, and started serving his delicious pastas and other Northern Italian specialties to hungry neighbors and tourists. Twenty-eight years later, the restaurant is still as busy and as popular as it was in the beginning. Celebrities like Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow have dined there, as well as politicians like Rudy Giuliani and Ed Koch. Chef Mosconi owns another restaurant in addition to Villa Mosconi, called Monte's, on the same street. He serves as an officer of the Chef de Cuisine of America and is a member of the Les Amis d'Escoffier, Societe de Philantropique, Chaines de Rotisseurs and the Food and Beverage Association. In addition to his culinary duties, Chef Mosconi is also a proud father and husband to his family, who live in New York.
