Frosinone - Latium

Frosinone, the capital city of the province also known as Frosinone, is a modest town, but one with great pride-and plenty of lodgings! One of Latium's five provinces (the others being Viterbo, Rieti, Rome, Frosinone and Latina), Frosinone lies 86 kilometers from Rome and 120 kilometers from Naples.

History
Frosinone shares much of its history with the rest of the region of Latium. Similar to its sister province, Viterbo, Frosinone encourages visits from its patrons-including those from nearby Rome-with its thermal baths and beauty spas. In fact, travelers to the city will discover there one of the oldest modern spas in Italy, Terme Pompeo, established in 1854. Frosinone is also home to the Università degli Studi di Cassino, and a small archeological museum.

Sights
Though Frosinone's Centro Storico (historic center) greatly suffered the aftermath from the Second World War, the imposing Romanesque rectangular steeple (reconstructed in its original style during the 1700s) still stands out from the rest of the city's the skyline. Next to the steeple, the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, built on top of the site of an earlier Romanesque church, attracts attention with its multicolored marble baroque interior, chapel altars, frescoes, and contemporary canvases painted by artists such as Colacicchi, Purificato, and Sarra. Not far from the cathedral, the Church of San Benedetto, first constructed in 1134, houses the only ancient pinacoteca (picture gallery) in the city.

Cuisine
A variety of special dishes find their origin in the cuisine of Frosinone. Among them, the hungry visitor may come across polenta with broccoli and sausage, stuffed lasagna, fettuccine with chicken giblets, chicken "alla diavola", lamb in red sauce, snails in red sauce, roast kid, cauliflower fritters, and for dessert, various forms of the popular "dolce," or sweet, ciambella (a pastry much like an Italian version of the donut).
