Isola Capo Rizzuto - Calabria

Isola di Capo Rizzuto is one of the most famous tourist resorts in the entire region of Calabria. It is located on the Ionian coast in the Province of Crotone, and though its name indicates that it is an island, it actually sits four kilometers from the sea on a hill overlooking the water.

History
This village was founded in about 1200 B.C. by the Iapigi who came from North Africa. The town thrived in Byzantine times. It was an important area for spreading the Catholic religion throughout the south. The name Isola (island) was mentioned by Leone VI in 900 A.D., but he may have been referring to several islands off the coast of the area and not the village itself. During the Middle Ages, the nobility fought over the area, as evidenced by the Ricca castle, defensive walls and coastal watchtowers, including Torre Vecchia and Torre Nuova, all built during that time period. Today it is an important farming center and since 1970 has been appreciated by tourists for its natural beauty.

Sights
In the mid-19th century, Baron Bacco had a licorice factory at Concio. Thought it closed in 1948, you can still see the building and its chimney, which is in good condition. You can take a day trip to Crotone to see its 15th century castle. But, the main attractions in Isola di Capo Rizzuto are the resorts and beaches. Relax, get a tan and savor local specialties like spaghetti con la neonata, spaghetti with fish sauce. Also, stop at the marine reserve to check out the ecology of the area.

Tips
Tourism rivals agriculture for the greatest contribution to the town's economy, so the numerous campsites and hotels in Isola di Capo Rizzuto provide 33,000 beds for the resort town. Therefore, nearly one million guests visit the area during the summertime. Travel to Isola di Capo Rizzuto during the spring or fall to avoid the tourist crowds.

Transportation
You can reach the area from the train station at Crotone, which is 18 miles away, but Isola di Capo Rizzuto also has its own train station. Buses are available from Crotone, Catanzaro, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Venice and Bari. By car, take highway A3 to SS 107.
