Piedmont
The
scenery is the main attraction in Piedmont, with its mountains, castles
and vineyard-covered hills. The name of the region is a reference
to the fact that Piedmont sits at the foot of the mountain (piede
dei monti); the Alps, that is. The Alps cover the land-locked region
on three sides. To the west, Piedmont is bordered by France; to the
north, Valle d'Aosta and Switzerland; to the east, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna;
and to the south, Liguria.
The most important crops in Piedmont are rice, corn, wheat, vegetables
and fruits, but the auto, mechanical and chemical industries are more
important for the economy. Most of the population is concentrated
in Torino, where there is a continental climate with cold winters
and warm, dry summers. Travel to Piedmont, if not for its beauty then
to experience its famous products: Fiats, vermouth and Italian breadsticks.
