Montepulciano - Pienza

Pienza is a lovely little town near Siena known for its panoramic location on the hills of Val d'Orcia. It lies on two slopes of the valley, formed by the river Tresa. The municipal territory of Pienza extends 122.53 square kilometers, and contains preciously rare and beautiful examples of Renaissance architecture. Thanks to its position, Pienza held great importance during the Middle Ages.

History
Pienza's origin harkens back to the 15th century, at the site of what was once the ancient castle of Corsignano. In time, the territory of Corsignano-as Pienza was formerly known-entered into the possession of the Piccolomini family. When, in 1458, Enea Silvio Piccolomini (who was born there in 1405) became Pope and took the name of Pio II, restoration began on the ancient castle. At that time, Corsignano formally changed its name to Pienza, and later officially received the title of Episcopal Seat in 1462. In the second half of the 1400s, Pienza reportedly cultivated large commercial and economic growth. However, after a series of military invasions and incurred devastation, Pienza lost much of its strength, and in 1559 the city ultimately became part of the Mediceo Duchy.

Outside central Pienza, one finds the Romanesque parish church, Pieve di Corsignano: a fortress decorated with mythological and fantastical theme-work. The ancient castle of Monticchiello also lies in the territory of Pienza, and claims importance as both a work of superb Medieval architecture and as a historical site. There, in April 1944, Southern Tuscan resistance fighters united with the town's population to defeat the Nazi fascist forces then occupying the area.

Cuisine
Today, Pienza thrives on tourism, beguiling visitors with its geographical position, architectural monuments-and yummy Tuscan delicacies! When there, be sure to try the Pecorino (sheep's cheese), as it is once of the best and most well-known in Italy. Also, treat yourself to a Fettunta con pecorino ed olio tartufato-a slice of toasted bread prepared with cheese and oil aromatized with truffles-and wash it all down with a glass of some good local wine.
