Rapallo - Liguria

Savona is strategically located between the Po Valley and the Ligurian Coast. It is noted for its busy port, but it is less crowded than Genova with only 70,000 citizens. It also has wonderful sights, a lively nightlife and excellent restaurants.

History
The Savonese and Genovese have been rivals since the time of the Punic Wars. In 1528, the Genovese attacked the harbor at Savona. They built a fortress on the Priamar promontory as a symbol of their superiority. In recent times, the city was bombed during World War II. The small medieval center of the town, however, still survives.

Sights
The Priamar Palace was restored as a museum that houses historical exhibits. Don't miss the Leon Pancarda and Brandale Towers that overlook the port and the center of the city. Piazza Mancine, across the harbor, has a bustling summer social scene. If you are looking for shopping, the main street is lined with stores.

Tips
The tourist office is located at Corso Italia, 157/r. It is closed on Sunday. Call 019 840 2321 for more information.

Transportation
You can travel to the city by train from most major cities or by car on the A10 or Route 1.
