Agostino Pavia, Barbera
d'Asti "Bricco Blina" 2000 $10
A true find from one of the grand crus of Barbera, Agliano d'Asti. Enjoy it young, clean and fresh, as its ripe fruit and lively acidity will complement the widest range of food. (Nadia Galati)
Renato Ratti, Barolo Marcenasco 1997 $40
Who says that 1997 was an inferior vintage in Barolo? Have a glass of this deliciously floral and fruity wine, with charm and enough structure for the heartiest ossobuco. (Lauber)
Cascina Val Del Prete, Roero Arneis 2001 $14
A rare breed of Arneis, half fermented in the barrel, half in stainless stell, this complex and extremely rich Piedmontese wine sports almost tropical flavors but enough acidity to keep everything in check. (Terra Nova)
La Calonica, Rosso Di Montelpuciano 2001 $12
This gamey, rich blend of Sangiovese (80%) and Canaiolo is a definite candidate for lamb, and a flavorful, pleasant one. The wine is aged for six months in barriques, but good Tuscan fruit remains unscathed. (Nadia Galati)
Poggio Antico, "Altero" Brunello di Montalcino 1998 $54
Altero is Poggio Antico's sole concession to the use of barriques. Smooth and rich, with flavors of chocolate and blueberry jam, this wine has complexity and good aging potential. (Empson)
Sella & Mosca, Monteoro 2000 $14
This is a single vineyard varietal Vermentino di Gallura wine from the leading producer in Sardina. Dried and fresh herbs, along with nutmeg in the nose, make it clean and rich on the palate with good acidity and some complexity. (Palm Bay)
Cabutto-Tenuta La Volta, Barbera d'Alba Superiore 2000 $18
Tenuta La Volta has been the Cabutto family's estate since 1920. Their Barbera has wholesome black fruit flavors, a dash of spice, and enough structure for the next five years. (Nadia Galati)
La Poderina, Brunello di Montalcino 1998 $55
This excellent wine has achieved a splendid balance of power and finesse. It boasts structure and aromatic complexity, yet has a silkiness that makes one forget the big tannins. (Vias)
Pojer e Sandri, "Pallai" Müller Thurgau delle Dolomiti 2001 $15
A bouquet of lilies of the valley, gardenias, edelweiss and mild spice awaits you in each glass of this classy, silky and extremely pleasant Italian white with a German name. (Vin Divino)
Candido, Duca d'Aragona 1996 $20
The best wine from this Apulian estate offers a complex nose of dried flowers, herbs, tobacco and smoked meats. It boasts a well-harmonized, supple palate, and a tannic finish that promises plenty of future. (Palm Bay)
Feudi di San Gregorio, "Piano di Montevergine" Taurasi Riserva 1997 $55
A single vineyard of terroir and breed, Piano di Montevergine offers the best interpretation of the Aglianico of Taurasi. Powerful and tannic yet extraordinarily complex, the wine has supple fruit and a mineral vein. (Palm Bay)
Ca d'Gal, Mostao d'Asti Vigna Vecchia 1999 $16
Ca d'Gal has brought sweet Moscato to a new level with this one-year-aged wine. It has an ethereal nose of flowers and orange zest, with silky texture and an extremely long finish. (Nadia Galati)
Sella & Mosca, Marchese di Villamarina 1997 $39
This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Sardinia (of all places) has a distinctive aromatic personality (eucalyptus smoke, chocolate), plenty of well accomplished fruit on the mild palate and supple, round tannins. (Palm Bay)
Solaria, Brunello di Montalcino 1998 $59
After the much-celebrated 1997 debut, here comes a stylish 1998, blossoming with violets, peony and roses. It's elegant and silky on the palate, with round tannins and a lingering finish. (Dufour)
Gaja, Gaia & Rey 2000 $115
This is a superb example of new world Chardonnay that has individuality and class like the best white Burgundies but a more sumptuous palate of sweet lemons, hazelnuts and cream, a neverending finish and much more. (Paterno)
