quaffable wines versatile enough to pair with fish.
Soft in tannins, these wines accept a variety of food pairings; best when drunk between one and five years from vintage. Fleshy, meaty, large-scaled wines meant to age and develop in time; better balance of freshness and complexity when young.
    2001 Cesari Valpolicella Classico Vino di Ripasso "Mara" $17.
This deep red is an excellent value-it is warm and velvety with licorice, spice and citrus flavors. Serve a glass with a roasted leg of lamb for a truly elegant combination.
    2001 Varaldo Dolcetto d'Alba $17.
Made from 100 percent Dolcetto grapes, this wine is deep-colored and full-bodied. Its silky sweet flavor is an excellent complement to aged pecorino or Parmigiano.
  1999 Vignamaggio Chianti Classico $20.
Produced on one of Tuscany's most historic estates, this wine has pleasant aromas of blackberries and mint, a smoky palate and a savory finish. Try it with a tomato-mozzarella salad.
2001 Valle dell'Acate Il Moro $28.
This wine is made exclusively from Nero d'Avola grapes, which impart the appealing dark red color. Aromas of berries and leather lead to a smooth palate, perfect for pairing with cheese.

A well-balanced blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato grapes, this Sicilian wine is cherry-red with ripe berry scents and a velvety taste. Try it with a simple tagliatelle alla bolognese.

The silky tannins of this Tuscan wine give it a smooth and elegant feel. Sweet oak and plum perfumes and a juicy taste of cherries shine through with a striking blackish color.
1999 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Grandi Annate $55.
Dense and spicy, this dry red wine is aged in oak and refined in glass bottles. The licorice-violet bouquet leads to red currant flavors on the palate-delicious with roast chicken.
    2000 Il Colombaio di Cencio Il Futuro $90.
This Super Tuscan is silky and rich. Berry, oak and tobacco scents make way for deliciously smooth flavors-a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
 

White Wines

Light dishes with rich flavor, seafood, antipasti, simple pastas Seafood, frittatas, white meats, lighter truffle dishes. Grilled fish, flavorful pastas, lemon chicken, white meats.
Refreshing acidity, pure fruit flavors, clean, crisp finish, no evident oak. Most versatile whites; rich in texture, complex in flavor. More powerful, fleshy wines with less pronounced aromatic profile and fruit flavors, suitable for aging.

  2003 San Quirico Vernaccia di San Gimignano $11.
Crisp and dry, this wine is made from 100 percent Vernaccia grapes, thought to be of Greek origin. The pleasant acidity and refreshing taste pairs well with fish and white meat.
2002 Botromagno Gravina Bianco $10.
This full-flavored white from Apulia is dry and elegant. Its fragrant bouquet of flowers, melon and peach refreshes the palate. Pair it with spicy foods or shellfish, or serve it as an aperitivo.
  2002 Tiefenbrunner Feldmarschall $19.
From one of the highest vineyards in Europe, this Trentino-Alto Adige wine pleases the nose with jasmine and sage, paving the way for delicious lime, apricot and cinnamon flavors.
2003 Musso"Langhe" Chardonnay $16.
From Piedmont, this wine is bright yellow and greenish in color. Its fruity bouquet and buttery texture make it an excellent choice to serve with grilled fish or seafood risotto.
2002 Moncalvina Coppo Moscato d'Asti $20.
Characteristic of Moscato, this wine is sweet, sparkling and refreshing. It's particularly light-a perfect dessert wine to serve alongside some tiramisù or holiday biscotti.
2002 Arrigoni Cinque Terre $29.
From the stunning village of Vernazza in Liguria, this wine exhibits fragrant aromas of green apple. It's a great find-dry and elegant with a pleasant fruity aftertaste.
2001 Tasca d'Almerita"Regaleali" Chardonnay $ 46.
Exclusively Chardonnay, this golden wine from Sicily is aged in oak barrels. It has a complex, intoxicating bouquet of tropical fruits with smoky notes and a fruity taste to follow.
2002 Livio Felluga Tocai Friulano $25.
One of the best-known winemakers in Friuli-Venezia Giulia produces this typical aperitivo wine. Bitter almond and tropical fruit aromas lead to a balance of spice and fruit flavors.
   
2002 Ronco delle Betulle Tocai Friulano $28.
Hints of nutmeg and a full soft flavor characterize this Tocai. The delicate bouquet makes it an ideal match for lighter fare such as grilled seafood or an antipasto platter.
