Aglianico del Vulture
Type: Red
Denomination: DOC
Characteristics: Dry, sometimes fizzy or slightly sweet; Deep ruby to garnet color; Full, tannic, and vinous
Region: Basilicata
History: The Greeks arrived in this area in the 6th or 7th century B.C. and planted vines including Aglianico. The name Hellenica was changed to Hellanica, then Aglianico at the end of the 15th century when the Aragonese controlled Naples. The grapes are now grown on the slopes of Monte Vulture and in the provinces of Matera and Potenza.
Grown at altitudes of up to 800 meters, the Aglianico grapes experience large day-to-night temperature variations. This aids greatly in preserving acidity. Aglianico is also provided with good drainage due to steep grades.
This wine is Basilicata's only DOC wine.
