Basilicata

Most of the vines in this region are cultivated in the northwest, around Mount Vulture, a mountain of volcanic origin. The soil in this area is ideal for the growth of Aglianico grapes, with Aglianico del Vulture being Basilicata's only DOC wine.

* In Potenza, the Antica Osteria Marconi and the Trattoria Zi Ming have an excellent selection of wines.
* Azienda Agricola Sperimentale Chiancalata (tel. 0835382981) in Matera is open only by appointment.
* In Viggiano, stop at Azienda Agricola Biologica Pisani (tel. 0975352603), which produces organically-grown grapes, including Merlot, Cabernet, Freisa, Cortese and Malvasia.
